My childhood upbringing is the single most important factor when it comes to how my literacy has been and will continue to be developed. My formal education career began when I stepped foot into my first pre-school classroom in 1999. Ever since then I have been gaining various literacy sponsors that have further helped my literacy skills. I have grown up in the city of Chicago my entire life, I have been exposed to an urban education by attending a CPS grade school. I changed it up completely by attending a more conservative, private, catholic high school. I was born in a predominantly hispanic household where English was a second language at home, but first language in school. I was introduced to Latin American literature like “don Quijote” way before I knew who Harry Potter or William Shakespeare were. My parents greatly influenced the material I read. In my free time I spent so much of it playing video games on all Sony products, too much time on Facebook and Myspace, and just the right amount watching TV and and ESPN. As I grew older I began to develop an interest in Hip-Hop culture. All of these things can be counted as sponsors for my literacy and I am thankful that is how it went about. I wouldn’t have had it any other way so I am very thankful for that.
